Fan Paintings of Landscapes of the Ming and Ch'ing Dynasties I
The folding fan, which originated in Japan in the Heian period (794-1185) , was introduced to China during the Northern Sung dynasty. It became popular from the middle of the Ming dynasty among the literati and high ranking bureaucrats, leading to the great flowering of the art of fan paintings.
